A pure cup of coffee

Cats, coffee, and quiet thoughts

The idea came to me – as one might expect – over a leisurely cup of coffee. It was a quiet evening after work. I was sitting on my couch, cup in hand, watching my two furry roommates. They moved naturally around the room, completely in the moment, while I pondered. In this apparent ordinariness, a clarity suddenly emerged: that interplay of calm, observation, and alertness that cats embody so effortlessly.

Cats are my soulmates. They take the space they need without demanding it, and they are at peace within themselves. This very attitude is reflected in my creative process. I don't work out of haste or compulsion, but out of attentiveness. Like a cat, I wait, observe, and allow – until the right moment arrives.

Coffee plays a central role in this. In the morning, the first cup is a necessity, almost a prerequisite for even leaving the house. During the working hours, it becomes a pure survival elixir. But in the afternoon and evening, back within one's own four walls, its meaning changes. Then coffee becomes a pleasure, a conscious pause, and a welcome contrast to the stressful everyday life.

Coffee accompanies me even while I paint. Between individual steps, I pause, take a sip, and look at the painting from different angles. These short breaks create distance and clarity, opening my eyes to details, moods, and what is still missing—or already just right.

Thus, the motif of this picture combines several of my passions in a single scene: furry noses, colors and images – and the pleasure of roasted beans. It is a quiet interplay of energy and serenity, of everyday life and creativity.

How do you enjoy your coffee? Or do you prefer to drink something else? What helps you switch off and pause?
